Academic career

1947 Born in Greece, where completed high school studies.
1972
Degree in Agricultural Sciences at the University of Pisa, Italy.
1974 Diploma of Specialisation in Pomology at the Scuola Superiore di Studi Universitari e di Perfezionamento, Pisa, Italy.
1975-1983 Worked as full-time post-graduate technical assistant at the University of Pisa, Italy.
1980 PhD in "Productivity of Cultivated Plants"
at the University of Padova, Italy.
1983
-1989 Associate Professor at the University of Pisa, Italy, teaching courses in Pomology and Olive Growing.
1990
to date Full Professor at the University of Basilicata, Potenza, Italy, teaching Fruit tree Physiology, General Fruit Growing and Nursery Techniques.

 

Overseas experience


1978 For one year, Fellowship at Pomology Department, University of California, Davis, USA.
1981 For two months, collaborated at
the Experimental Stations of East Malling, Long Ashton and Letcombe, UK.
1985-1986 Taught post-graduate courses on Water Relations in Fruit Crops at
the Mediterranean Agronomic Institute, Chania, Greece.
1986 Spent six month at
the Department of Horticulture, Geneva, N.Y. and the  Pomology Department at the University of Michigan, East Lansing, USA.
1990 Organised laboratory on Water Relation and technical training in Canton, China, over two month period.

Detailed curriculum

Prof. Cristos XILOYANNIS expert in Fruit tree physiology, General fruit growing and Nursery techniques. Holds a degree in Agricultural Sciences at the University of Pisa, Italy. In 1974 holds a Diploma of Specialisation in Pomology at the Scuola Superiore di Studi Universitari e di Perfezionamento, Pisa, Italy. In 1980 holds the Ph.D. in "Productivity of Cultivated Plants" at the University of Padova, Italy. From 1983 to 1989 started the activity as Associate Professor at the University of Pisa, Italy, teaching courses in Pomology and Olive Growing. From 1990 to date started the activity as Full Professor at the University of Basilicata, Potenza, Italy, teaching Fruit tree Physiology, General Fruit Growing and Nursery Techniques. Prof. Cristos Xiloyannis had work experience overseas: in 1978 for one year, had Fellowship at Pomology Department, University of California, Davis, USA; in 1981 collaborated at the Experimental Stations of East Malling, Long Ashton and Letcombe, UK; in 1985 and 1986 taught post-graduate courses on Water Relations in Fruit Crops at the Mediterranean Agronomic Institute, Chania, Greece; in 1986 Prof. Xiloyannis spent six month at the Department of Horticulture, Geneva, N.Y. and the  Pomology Department at the University of Michigan, East Lansing, USA; in 1990 organised laboratory on Water Relation and technical training in Canton, China, over two month period. Furthermore Prof. Xiloyannis has a sound experience in organization and coordination: from 1992-1995, was coordinator of PhD courses in Plant Productivity at the University of Basilicata (UBAS), Potenza, Italy; from 1995-2002, was Head of Department of Crop Science at UBAS; from 1996-2001 was Rector delegate for the development at UBAS; from 1996-2003 was Chairman of ISHS Working Group on Water Relations in Fruit Crops, and member of Broad of Directors of the Italian Horticulture Society. Xiloyannis participate as Member of Scientific Committee of the Metapontum Agrobios Research Station, Metaponto, Italy, of Assofruit (Association of Fruit Growers), Matera, Italy, and of the scientific journal "Rivista di Frutticoltura” Italy. He has a sound research experience on the relationships existing between soil water and light availability and the physiological responses of tree plants. Prof. Cristos Xiloyannis has been working in U.S.A. and Great Britain on bi-lateral scientific projects connected to the productivity of the major fruit tree crops. He is responsible of research units of the DPV-PZ, involved in national and international projects. Actually his interest is focused on the definition of sustainable production systems for olive, peach, plum, apricot, kiwi fruit and grapevine and nursery production. He is author and co-author of more than 180 papers published on national and international reviews, expert in Fruit tree physiology, General fruit growing and Nursery techniques.
